Storm damages 100 structures in Conway County town of Sardis

SARDIS, Ark. (AP) - Owners of homes and businesses in the Sardis community of Conway County surveyed damage to their properties today after a tornado ripped through the area last night.

County Judge Jimmy Hart says nearly 100 homes were damaged eight were destroyed. Hart says three businesses were also damaged during the storm.

Hart says officials are conducting a head count today to try to account for all of the area's residents. Firefighters are going to door to door to help in the count. There have been no reports of fatalities or significant injuries in the community.

Hart says the county will ask for federal help to clean up, and he estimates the damage was between seven and eight million dollars.

One person died in yesterday's storms when a vehicle was swept up in a tornado near Morrilton.
