Broken relationship behind two deaths and a wounding

UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) - Obion County authorities say a romantic relationship that had failed was behind a murder-suicide in a cemetery over the weekend.

Sheriff Jerry Vastbinder identified the victims as 20-year-old Sue Ellen Gregory and 19-year-old Ryan Nathaniel Puckett.

Wounded in the Friday night incident was Gregory's friend, Samantha Lynn Springer.

Springer told the Union City Daily Messenger from her hospital room that Puckett pleaded with Gregory to talk with him one last time before ending their relationship.

She says she drove her friend to a Civil War era cemetery and Gregory got into Puckett's car, about ten feet away from Springer's vehicle.

Springer said when she used her cellular telephone to tell Gregory it was time to leave, Puckett shot Gregory once with a pistol in the car and again as she tried to get out.

Police say Puckett then shot Springer as she ran to Gregory's aid, hitting her four times, before fatally shooting himself.

Springer called 9-1-1 and stayed on the phone until police arrived. She's reported in stable condition today at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.
