Shooting injuries one at Ed Rice Community Center

Tyrone Spencer spent Monday afternoon shooting hoops at Ed Rice Community Center.

"I grew up here shooting ball at Ed Rice like everybody else," says Spencer. "It's a great place to come," he adds.

Security was never a concern, until now. Shell casings lined the parking lot Monday night after round after round went off.

"Evidently, there had been some kind of physical altercation here at the community center and the shooting was a result," says Lt. L. Charnes with Memphis Police.

Witnesses say two groups of teens got into fight at an apartment complex down the street. One group retreated to the community center. The other group followed.

"Probably don't even come up here," says Spencer. "Just knew where the guys came and knew how to find them I guess, and that's how it came about," he adds.

Spencer says pure pandemonium ensued.

"All of the sudden a scuffle broke out inside the gym and I guess it escalated outside the gym and shots fired," recalls Spencer.

He says he heard every shot.

"Probably about six, six or seven," says Spencer.

Memphis Police say a Ford Explorer was hit a couple of times. That's where some of the teens had attempted to escape. An 18 year-old boy was shot once in the shoulder. Police aren't sure if he was part of one of the groups or just a bystander.

"That's going to have to be determined," says Lt. Charnes.

Police are also uncertain about why the two groups were fighting. And they're still trying to determine whether the shooting might be gang related.

The suspect remains at large. Anyone with information should call Crime-Stoppers at 528-CASH.
