Fire kills one at assisted living center

Graceland Gardens is a living community for senior citizens.  Many of the seniors here live alone, including the man who died.

The Memphis Fire Department got the call about a quarter to seven.  They had trouble getting inside because of heavy smoke.  The man's friends watched as the firefighters struggled to save him.

They were able to put the flames out in four minutes, but it was too late.

When crews finally made their way into the apartment, they found the 69-year-old man in his wheelchair in the back bedroom.

They were able to keep the fire from spreading to other apartments, but a feeling of great sadness is spreading through the complex and among the firefighters as we move toward the Christmas holiday.

"You see something like this and then you get to thinking and then it go through your mind and just nerve-wracking and sad. 'Cause we all, all that's standing around, we knew him," said neighbor Ruby Bolton.

"Having a elderly person this time of year and finding him in the back bedroom like that and ah, it was extensive damage in there," said Chief Henry Posey of the Memphis Fire Department.

Right now investigators are just trying to figure out what caused the fire.  All they know is it started in the back bedroom.
