Hutchinson against higher minimum wage for Arkansas only

Republican gubernatorial candidate Asa Hutchinson says Arkansas businesses could be harmed if the state raises the minimum wage higher than the federal rate. But Hutchinson says he is withholding judgment on a proposal by a state coalition to raise the state minimum wage to a dollar higher than the federal minimum of $5.15 per hour.

Hutchinson, who is a former Arkansas congressman and Bush administration official, it could hurt the ability of state businesses to compete if the minimum wage is raised in Arkansas only. But Hutchinson says he supports a higher federal minimum wage and voted for a hike in the rate in 2000 when he was in Congress.

A spokesman for Attorney General Mike Beebe, a Democrat running for governor, says Beebe supports both state and federal efforts to increase the minimum wage.
