14-year-old admits to killing, may serve in Memphis

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore's youngest murder suspect could spend most of his adolescence at a Memphis juvenile lockup.

The boy was 13 when he was accused of fatally shooting a 23-year-old man in a public housing project last June in an argument over thrown bottles.

Now 14, the youth was sentenced yesterday to be held at a secure juvenile facility until he's 21.

The boy's attorney, Rodney Gray, says CCA-operated Shelby Training Center in Memphis and the KidsPeace Mesabi Academy in Buhl, Minnesota have space for his client.

The youth showed no emotion during the hearing, uttering "yes, sir" and "no, sir" to the judge's questions.

He stared blankly as the victim's mother spoke about the pain she has endured since her only son, Jerrod Hamlett, was fatally shot June 25th and left behind a now- three-year-old son.
