Lawsuit accuses nursing home of malpractice

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A woman whose father died in a Memphis nursing home is suing the home, claiming wrongful death, negligence and malpractice.

Thomas Harris died at the Saint Peter Villa nursing home September 4th at age 74.

Harris had been brought to the home about seven months earlier after suffering a stroke.

Shirley Ray says her father's care seemed fine at first, but over time his appetite disappeared and he developed bedsores that had maggots in them.

Father John Geaney, spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, says Saint Peter's hasn't seen the lawsuit, and the nursing home can't comment about individual patients because of privacy rights.

The last inspection by the Tennessee Department of Health of the 180-bed facility reported that 7 percent of the residents had pressure sores. The state and national average is 14 percent.
