Shelby County raising fees for firefighter service

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Shelby County residents served by the county fire department will start paying more for the protection beginning next month.

The fire fee for about 44,000 households in unincorporated areas of Shelby County and in Lakeland is increasing $3.25 a month to $27.25.

The fees, included as part of Memphis Light, Gas and Water utility bills, go toward the roughly 13 million dollar budget of the Shelby County Fire Department.

The department of some 150 firefighters covers about 310 square miles of county land.

Fire department officials say the decision to raise the fees for the first time since 2002 came from the fire chief and county public works director, even though some residents aren't happy with the increase.

The County Commission doesn't have to approve the fee hike.
