Memphis beats Akron; DeAngelo Williams sets another record

DETROIT (AP) - DeAngelo Williams rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns to lead Memphis over Akron 38-to-31 in the Motor City Bowl. Williams set an NCAA record with his 34th 100-yard game, breaking a tie with Archie Griffin of Ohio State and Tony Dorsett of Pittsburgh. The Tigers led 38-to-17 with just over three minutes left in regulation, but Akron quarterback Luke Getsy rallied the Zips with a pair of touchdown passes in a 52-second span. The second came after the Zips recovered an on-side kick. Leading 38-to-31 with under a minute left, the Tigers recovered Akron's second on-side kick and ran the clock out. Getsy finished 34-of-59 for a Motor City Bowl-record 455 yards with four t-d passes. Memphis kicker Stephen Gostkowski booted three field goals including a 50-yarder. The Tigers finish the year 7-and-5 while the Zips, who were playing in their first bowl game, wind up 7-and-6.

DeAngelo Williams set an NCAA record with his 34th 100-yard rushing game and scored three touchdowns for Memphis. He ran for 233 yards on 30 carries and finished his career with 6,021 yards rushing. The Tigers took a 21-point lead with 3:09 left, but needed to recover an onside kick with 55 seconds left to seal the win. Akron quarterback Luke Getsy threw four touchdown passes and was 34-for-59 for 455 yards.
