Widow sues police over shooting of husband

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A woman whose husband was shot and killed by police following a pursuit on foot has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the department.

Alice Johnson claims that an officer was not justified in shooting Willie Johnson Junior on May 20th when they chased him from a motel and said Johnson pulled a gun on him.

The department has not identified the officer who shot Johnson, but the suit identifies him as Michael Davis, along with other defendants and officers Martin Tuboris and D.R. Stine and the city of Memphis.

The incident began when officers responded to a call from a woman claiming that her boyfriend had threatened her with a handgun.

Police say when the officer told Johnson to stop and show his hands, Johnson ran across a grassy lot and pointed a gun at the officer. Police said they found a loaded revolver at the scene, but the suit claims Johnson was unarmed and posed no threat to police when he was shot at least four times.
