"The Book of Daniel" series stirs debate with viewers

Action News 5 has received hundreds of e-mails and phone calls from Mid-Southerners complaining about the new NBC series "The Book of Daniel."

And if you haven't seen the promos yet--you may be in for a shock.

From the moment th TV promos hit the air, this depiction of an addicted minister and his dysfunction family has upset a lot of people.

"Its very concerning because it portrays Christianity in a negative light," said Jody Ponders.

Negative some Christians say - because the program's minister is hooked on prescription drugs, his wife is an alcoholic, his son is homosexual, and his daughter sells drugs.

Ponders and many others are now part of a nationwide online campaign to stop the new series from ever reaching your tv set.

Some of the emails we received said: "Please do not air this horrible piece of trash;" "This is not the portrayal of christ and christians that your average Memphian will find entertaining;" and "We will not watch it."

Especially upsetting to some is this depiction of Jesus Christ as the gabby passenger who doles out advice in the ministers station wagon.

However NBC has countered opposition with its own e-mail which defends the series as just fiction.

NBC's statement says, in part: "We're confident that once audiences view this quality drama themselves, they'll appreciate this thought-provoking examination of one American family."
