Sports talk radio station changes to Country Legends

The Tennessee Waltz is coming to a radio station near you.

Not the political scandal, but the song by Patti Page.  AM radio station 790 is changing from a sports talk format to classic country.

Station executive vice president Terry Wood said Thursday there are too many sports talk stations in Memphis, and it was time to look for a new audience.  The new station will be known as "WMC-79 Country Legends."

"We're talking Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones,  Willie Nelson all of those big acts, big artists from that era," Wood said.
He said the success of the movie "Walk the Line" was an indication that there is still an audience for Country Legends.  Wood said the songs on the new format, "were the staples of AM when AM Country was hot."
The station is betting those songs will be hot once again.

Station officials said the Memphis Tigers will be staying put.  Listeners will hear the rest of the basketball season and the John Calipari show on WMC-79.
The format change will take place in several days.
