Man hospitalized after being shot twice by MPD officer

A man is recovering at a Memphis hospital tonight after being shot by a Memphis police officer early this morning. The suspect was taken by ambulance to Methodist University Hospital in critical condition.

He was shot twice following a violent domestic dispute.

Police got the call just after five this morning.

Officials say witnesses told the responding officer that the suspect had attacked his girlfriend with a knife inside an apartment off Clementine.

Detectives told Action News 5 that the suspect, who was intoxicated, would not respond to the officer's orders, but instead lunged at the officer. That's when investigators say the officer shot the suspect twice in the neck and thigh.

"We can guard our life, or safeguard our lives when we feel that someone else's life is in danger or our own," said MPD Det. Taurus Nolen. "So in this particular situation, I would feel it's safe to assume that he felt that his life was in danger."

Investigators say they did not recover a knife at the scene, but say based on information from witnesses, the responding officer could not rule out the suspect had one when he lunged at the officer.

Nolen said he did not know when, or if, any action will be taken against the officer involved in the shooting. However, he did say the suspect will be charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
