MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Joey Dorsey scored 14 points on 7-for-7
shooting and had nine rebounds and six blocks to lead No. 4 Memphis
to an 83-50 victory over Middle Tennessee on Wednesday night.
The Tigers (12-2) rebounded from Monday's 69-58 loss to No. 15
Texas. Their other loss was to No. 1 Duke in the Preseason NIT
Rodney Carney led Memphis with 19 points, while Antonio Anderson
had 13 and Robert Dozier 12.
Marcus Morrison had 11 points for Middle Tennessee (7-5), which
shot 32 percent and had 25 turnovers. Fats Cuyler, the Blue
Raiders' leading scorer with a 14.2 average, missed all eight of
his shots from the field and was held to three points. Middle
Tennessee's starting five was a combined 9-of-31 from the field,
1-of-10 outside the arc.
Memphis held a double-digit lead for the last 9 minutes of the
half and was up 40-26 at halftime.
The Tigers, who were held to 29 percent shooting by Texas, came
out firing, hitting six of their first eight shots and converting
50 percent in the half. Carney had 10 points to lead Memphis.
The Blue Raiders' best offense was getting behind the Memphis
fullcourt press with a handful of breakout layups. Otherwise,
Middle Tennessee had a tough time with its offense, shooting 30
percent and committing 11 turnovers. Cuyler didn't record his first
point until hitting a free throw with 3:50 left in the half. He
scored all three of his points in the first half.
The early stages of the second half presented more of the same
as Carney scored on two breakaway dunks. He added a 3-pointer
before the first media timeout of the half, and Memphis extended
its lead to 54-35.
The dunks were part of a 23-2 run as Memphis held the Blue
Raiders to only one field goal over 9 minutes. That built the lead
to 34, and Memphis coasted home.
