Northwest flight attendants threaten strike

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The union representing Northwest Airlines flight attendants is threatening to strike if a bankruptcy judge allows the carrier to reject its union contract.

That information comes in a court filing by the Professional Flight Attendants Association related to Northwest's bankruptcy case.

The airline operates passenger hubs in Minneapolis, Memphis and Detroit.

Northwest is negotiating with pilots, flight attendants and ground workers in advance of a January 17th hearing where the nation's fourth- largest airline will ask to reject their contracts.

Northwest has said it wants to use more foreign-based flight attendants on international flights and use flight attendants at a new subsidiary on smaller domestic flights.

The flight attendants said in the filing that Northwest's plan could reduce their number by half.
