McNairy County sheriff stepping down after conviction

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - McNairy County officials have confirmed Sheriff Tommy Riley has resigned.

Riley was convicted last year of improperly releasing a female inmate so she could get an abortion after being impregnated by a jailer.

District Attorney General Elizabeth Rice filed an ouster lawsuit against Riley and it was scheduled to be heard beginning January 19th.

McNairy County Mayor Wilburn Ashe confirms Riley submitted his resignation from the $60,000 per year job yesterday. His last day in office will be January 18th.

Charges against two other department officials have also been resolved.

Jailer Johnny Carter pleaded guilty last spring and served a six-month sentence. The trial of former jail administrator Jimmy Lyles ended in a hung jury -- then the state dropped the charge. Lyles resigned from his position last week.
