Hundreds spend chilly night with no heat

Winter temperatures are back after almost a week's worth of balmy weather.

In Olive Branch, hundreds of homeowners were left out in the cold yesterday after a gas leak left them without heat. About 400 homes lost their natural gas for the entire day.

A spokesman for Atmos Energy told Action News 5 that most customers were back up by 6 P.M., but some waited hours past that to get their gas turned back on.

The O'Briens didn't have heat until after midnight last night. With three small sick children in the house - and a lot of extended family staying together - it was a huge inconvenience.

"The bulk of the day was spent trying to address that problem and find out what was going on and I think probably the worst thing was not knowing what was going on," said Mike O'Brien.

Residents we spoke with complained about busy customer service lines and a slow response time on the part of the gas company.

An Atmos spokesman tells us crews were working as quickly and safely as possible.

As for the customer complaints, we're told the incident is under review and that the company always tries to keep customers as informed as possible.
