Sometimes plans can backfire, like scheduling Winthrop for a Sunday tilt with the Tigers. John Calipari was hoping to boost the Tigers RPI ranking when he made the move, but they've played so well, it turned out be unnecessary. So there was not much to gain, but a lot to lose against the defending Big South champs. Fortunately Memphis escaped with a 73-63 win.
Winthrop jumped out to a 5-0 lead when Craig Bradshaw out-battled Rodney Carney for a rebound and put it back in. John Calipari didn't like what he saw and called a quick timeout. Andre Allen came back out with a 3 ball and it ws on. 11 points for AA in just 15 minutes of play.
Rodney Carney led the Tigers with 21 points while Darius Washington logged 25 minutes despite a nagging thigh injury. The Tigers led by 9 at the break. Winthrop stayed around but could never close the gap. The Tigers didn't play particularly well, but they get the win 73-63.
Next up: East Carolina Wednesday on the road.
