Ford cleared to take seat as Senate committee delays vote

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A state Senate committee investigating a disputed Memphis election voted today to delay making a recommendation to the full body.

The committee voted 4-to-2 to allow more time to investigate the 13-vote election of Democrat Ophelia Ford. This clears the way for her to take her seat tomorrow for a special legislative session on ethics.

Ford is assuming the seat that had been held by her brother John Ford until he resigned after his arrest on federal corruption charges last year.

State Election Coordinator Brook Thompson said today he has found that at least six votes should not have counted. They are two deceased voters, three felons and one who moved across the street and lived in the wrong district.

Thompson said another two votes are "questionable."
