Democrats push Alito to open up on abortion

CAPITOL HILL (AP) - The top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee says Samuel Alito's answers to questions in his confirmation hearings have "inconsistencies."

Senator Patrick Leahy told Alito this morning that Democrats are "troubled" by his answers on issues ranging from voting rights to ethics and his membership in a conservative group.

The Supreme Court nominee's confirmations hearings are in their third day.

Democrat Richard Durbin says Alito's claim yesterday of an "open mind" toward abortion cases doesn't jibe with his writings and testimony. The Illinois Democrat says it appears Alito has "a mind that sadly is closed in some instances."

Durbin today prodded Alito to echo Chief Justice John Roberts' testimony last year in confirmation hearings that Roe versus Wade is "settled law." Alito would only call the ruling that legalized abortion "an important precedent" that has been re-affirmed by the high court.
