Election Registry dismisses complaint against former Shelby mayor

A campaign finance complaint against former Shelby County Mayor Jim Rout died with a tie vote today in Nashville by the Registry of Election Finance board.

The complaint involved a 2002 function that Rout said was a political event, but that invitations said was to honor him on his 40th wedding anniversary.

The board voted 3-3, ending the case.

Chairwoman Lee Anne Murray said the situation seemed similar to one in which former state Senator John Ford of Memphis was fined ten-thousand dollars for using campaign money to pay for his daughter's wedding reception.

Board member George Harding said the invitation was improperly worded, but added that the campaign had no intent to skirt the rules.
