Harold Ford denies accepting donations with Abramoff scandal ties

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Congressman Harold Ford Junior of Memphis says reports that he has received donations with ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff are scurrilous and false.

Ford, a Democrat who is running for the U-S Senate, has been accused by Republican Senate candidate Bob Corker of taking two donations of $500, a donation of $250 and a $973 payment for a dinner reception from Michael D. Smith, a lobbyist with Democratic ties who worked with the so-called "Team Abramoff."

Ford told reporters in a teleconference today that he doesn't know Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to fraud, corruption and tax evasion charges. Abramoff is cooperating with prosecutors who are investigating alleged bribes to lawmakers and their aides.
