Senator says lobbyists hard at work during special session

Tougher regulation of lobbyists is just one of the issues Tennessee lawmakers are working on during a special session this month.

Even so, some debating the ethics legislation last week took cash from lobbyists.

Democratic Senate leader Jim Kyle, of Memphis, says he turned down a campaign contribution while in Nashville during a special session on ethics last week.

But if Kyle had chosen to accept it, it would have been perfectly legal.

"I'm not saying that others should do what I did, but I just thought as sponsor of the bill and someone who's worked on the committee I should be holding myself to a little bit different standard," he said.

Accepting campaign contributions is illegal during the General Assembly's regular session. However, Kyle says that law does not apply during special sessions.
