Community regrouping after the beating of an elderly man

A community is trying to regroup after the beating of an elderly man in his own driveway Sunday afternoon on the 5100 block of Blackwell in Raleigh.

Memphis Police are on the lookout for the suspect. Neighbors say the elderly couldn't get the wallet out of his back pocket quick enough and the suspect began beating him in the head with the gun. Witnesses say the young man then ran off with the wallet through the gap in this fence.

Dorothy Black and her husband Al were across the street getting groceries out of their car when the robbery went down.

"Mr. Rowberry was standing here in the driveway with blood streaming down his face and his wife was just hysterical," said Neighbor Dorothy Black.

"I hope you don't have to just go around your whole life just being aware that somebody's trying to rob you, trying to do harm to you, I don't know where that's gonna leave us in this world," said Al Black.

They say past attempts to start a neighborhood watch have been unsuccessful, but that this robbery could change that.

Investigators never caught up with the suspect.

An ambulance rushed the elderly man to the hospital in non-critical condition.
