Two dead after shooting at Tunica County nightclub

An argument may be to blame for an early morning shooting in Tunica County that killed two people and left three others injured.

The shooting happened in Prichard, Mississippi, close to the Tunica and Tate county lines, at Moe D's, a club described as "the place to go" for people who live in several different counties, including Shelby.

Major William Lewis of the Tunica County Sheriff's Department said such a shooting is a rare occurance.  "We consider an incident like this a major incident, because we don't have shootings like this," he said.

Lewis said the Tunica County Sheriff's Deparment had been called to Moe D's in the past because of problems.  Investigators said the club was busy Sunday night, filled to capactiy with about 75 people.

Department officials said most of the shooting victims are from Coldwater, about 30 miles away.

One witness, who did not want to be identified, described a terrifying scene inside the club when the shooting happened.  "We heard gunshots, and everybody scattered. Then later everybody found out people were shot, and I tried to help my brother get to the hospital. He was shot in the hand," the witness said.

Investigators weren't sure of the motive for the shooting, but people who knew the victims said it stemmed from an argument that began last week.

Marilyn Island, who lives across the street from Moe D's, said she was not surprised to hear about the shooting.

"It's the place to be because, you can be 14 to 40 and you can get in the place," she said. "It's the place to be because you can drink, smoke, do drugs, you can do anything in the club."

She said she hears gunshots all the time, and has complained repeatedly about the club.

Action New 5 was unable to reach the owner of Moe D's for comment Monday.

The Tunica County Sheriff's department has one man from Coldwater in custody, who is expected to be charged in the shootings.
