Memphis City Council ready to tackle budget deficit

The City of Memphis is in the hole by millions of dollars, and Tuesday city council members will be looking for a solution during a budget meeting.

During Mayor Willie Herenton's State of the City address earlier this month, the mayor outlined what needed to happen to get the city of its $26 million dollar hole. The mayor says the city needs to find an alternative source of revenue and move away from property tax.

Meanwhile, some city council members are preparing Memphians for the decisions that may come. "The only way we're going to achieve the goal of returning the city to financial prosperity is that we're going to have to spread the pain throughout the community", said council member Jack Sammons on January 4th.

Tune in for the latest on Tuesday's council meetings on Action News 5 at 5pm and 6pm.
