Gulf South Conference tournaments coming to Southaven

The Gulf South Conference announced Tuesday that it play its men's and women's conference basketball tournaments at the DeSoto Civic Center over the next several years.

It's an announcement that could translate to good news for local business, and some local universities.

"We enable local people to go see high quality college basketball and softball at a very reasonable price," said GSC Commissioner Nate Salant. "We try to peg it to the price of a

Salant says the GSC has been trying to the tournaments to the Memphis area for a long time.

"There's a ton of things to do. You get in your car, you're on Beale street in 20 to 25 minutes," he said.  "There's just so much here to attract our fans and make it a win win situation."

The opportunity for the DeSoto Civic Center came about after the Tupelo opted out of its contract with the Gulf South Conference. Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said Tupelo's loss is his city's gain.

"The basketball tournament will have a huge unknown return for our area,"

Because there are 17 schools in the conference, local hotels and restaurants should be full at tournament time.
