Senators oppose lawyers' fees for Ford

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee lawmakers are asking a federal judge to reject state Senator Ophelia Ford's request for more than $57,000 dollars to pay lawyers' fees.

Ford, a Memphis Democrat, wants the money for lawyers who helped hold off a Republican attempt to remove her from the state Senate.

The squabbling continues over Ford's 13-vote victory in a special election in September. A federal judge's ruling delayed an expected Senate vote on removing Ford.

Senators asked Judge Bernice Donald in a petition yesterday to postpone a decision on Ford's request until the matter is resolved in the court.

Ford opponents say the election was so marred by voting irregularities it should be voided. She defeated Republican opponent Terry Roland.
