International Paper to sell 218,000 acres to conservation groups

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - International Paper has announced plans to sell conservation groups 218-thousand acres of forest scattered across 10 southeastern states, including Arkansas.

The Connecticut-based company called the 300 million-dollar deal with the Nature Conservancy and the Conservation Fund the largest private land conservation sale ever in the region.

The acreage will be purchased in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The sale agreement calls for timber harvesting to continue on some of the land, going to International Paper for production.
