FedEx MD-10 drops part of engine in east Arkansas field

OTWELL, Ark. (AP) - A large part of an engine from an MD-10 cargo jet operated by FedEx fell into a farmer's field in Arkansas.

A five- or six-foot section of the engine's rear portion plummeted from the sky yesterday and partially buried itself in the soil southwest of Jonesboro.

The plane returned safely to Memphis International Airport and no injuries were reported.

The craft was en route from Memphis to Seattle.

Pilots on board notified air traffic controllers of an in-flight emergency about 70 miles northwest of Memphis.

Once the plane landed, pilots evacuated using a slide.
