Northwest plane makes emergency landing at Memphis International Airport

A Northwest airplane made an emergency landing at Memphis International Airport Friday morning.

Airport officials said the DC-9 passenger plane lost a tire on its landing gear while taking off for Indianapolis.

Authorities determined the plane could land safely and brought it back to Memphis.

The airport mobilized emergency landing crews as a precaution, but officials say there was no reason for passengers to worry.

"Inherently with any mechanical operation, I don't think it should cause any concern for air travelers," said Scott Brockman at Memphis International Airport.

Scott Brockman said airplanes have multiple tires on their landing gear, as a precaution for situations like this.

Passengers were put on another plane to Indianapolis.
