Spring is in the air, even if it felt like a crisp Fall day perfect for football. The Memphis Tigers wrapped up Spring drills with the annual Blue-Grey game at the Liberty Bowl. DeAngelo Williams watched from the sideline as he gets ready for the NFL draft at the end of the month. Joeseph Doss looks to step into the starting role. The sophomore from Melrose carried 10 times for 23 yards and 1 touchdown. T.J Pitts is also in the running, he had10 carries, for 24 yards and a touchdown; no one broke off a long one.
At quarterback, newcomer Martin Hankins saw most of the time under center this spring with Patrick Byrne and Will Hudgens still on the mend from broken legs. Hankins went 12 of 26 for 86 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Defnsive back Chris Huffman was the MVP of the game with 5 tackles, a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery that ended 62 yards later in the endzone.
"Overall I thought our defense has gotten better. I think the addition of Jada Brown, Gregg Terell and Cory Mills, I don't think there is any question those guys make a difference," said Tommy West afterward.
The Tigers open the season against Ole Miss September 2nd.
