MILLINGTON, Tenn. (AP) - Millington Mayor Terry Jones says he's accomplished something that some in Shelby County say is impossible.
He's gotten the mayors of Shelby County's seven municipalities and the Shelby County mayor to agree on something.
Every mayor signed a March 20th letter which urges Governor Bredesen to support a route that carries the proposed Interstate 69 west of the Memphis suburb of Millington.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation can route the section of the new interstate either west or east of U-S Highway 51 between Millington and Dyersburg.
Jones has said that the western route would benefit his city. He also says it would avoid bringing heavy traffic into the residential areas of eastern Shelby County.
I-69 is a 16-hundred mile interstate highway that will connect the Canadian border in Michigan to the Mexican border in Texas.
