After four fantastic years in Memphis, the fairy tale for Memphis Tiger running back DeAngelo Williams opened a new chapter Saturday. With the 27th pick in the NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers selected him. He was the 3rd running back taken overall behind Heisman trophy winner Reggie Bush and Minnesota's Laurence Maroney.
DeAngelo watched the draft at a private location before joining his friends and family at the Fox N Hound in Cordova. The NCAA's all-time leader in all-purpose yards landed in a good situation. Carolina is a winning team that regularly competes for the Super Bowl.
"I'm nervous right now because I don't know what to expect. It's a thrill to be a (first round) draft pick. I said on the way over I'm playing on the same team as Jake Delhomme and Julius Peppers. They were in the NFC Championship last year. You can't play for a better team."
He's right about that. Williams says he'll wear number 34 for the Panthers, his old high school number.
