The Grizzlies played their hearts out in Game 3, that's the good news. The bad news is, it still wasn't enough to win. It was a great atmosphere at FedExForum after playing the first two games in Dallas. The Grizzlies led for most of the game behind 20 points from Chucky Atkins and 16 points from Pau Gasol.
They had an 8 point lead at the half and clung to it until late in the 4th quarter when Dirk Nowitzki nailed a 3 that gave the Mavs a 69-67 lead. The Grizzlies answered with buckets from Lorenzen Wright and Atkins and had a 3 point lead with a few second left. But Nowitzki hit another 3 from the top of the key to tie the game at 76 and send it to overtime. Nowitzki had 36 points as the Mavs went on to win 94-89. The Grizzlies are still waiting on that first playoff win, 0-11 in franchise history, 0-3 in this series.
"Those guys made all the key plays, they made their free throws, made key offensive rebounds...when all else fails, they got Dirk Nowitzki," Atkins said afterward. Eddie Jones says their effort wasn't complete.
"We know they're a tough rebounding team. We just have to continue to fight. I thought we fought for the first 44 minutes, after that, we let them get whatever they wanted."
Now the battle cry is to avoid the sweep says Wright. "We can't let this team sweep us. We've got another game, we're gonna have to come out here and use all our hearts to get a win and then go to Dallas and see what happens down there."
