SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) - Police say a man has been charged with shaking a 4-month-old baby to death.
Donald Knight Jr., 25, of La Vergne, was indicted last week and charged with aggravated child abuse and felony murder for the death of Trevor Jones on March 7, Smyrna Police Detective Sgt. Jeff Duke said Tuesday.
Trevor was the son of Jennifer Jones, who Knight was dating at the time. Knight is accused of shaking the baby at Jones' home when the child was put down to sleep, police said.
When the baby was checked on nearly an hour later, he wasn't breathing. Duke said a preliminary autopsy showed Trevor had signs of being shaken.
After receiving those results, Duke interviewed family members and Knight on April 11: "Mr. Knight told me he had shook Trevor while he was walking him," Duke said.
Knight didn't tell Jones about shaking the baby, so she was unaware of what happened before he put the child to bed, Duke said.
Knight is being held in Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $200,000 bond. He will receive copies of the indictments Monday in Circuit Court and another court hearing is set May 30.
