Senate reopens committee to discuss smoking ban

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - There's new life for a bill in Tennessee legislature to ban smoking in all buildings owned or operated by the state.

The Tennessee Senate today agreed to reopen a previously closed committee so it can evaluate the measure.

The measure is scheduled to be taken up by a special meeting of the Senate State and Local Government Committee next week.

The bill's chances appear to be strong given that the same committee earlier this year passed a measure to ban smoking in all indoor public places. That measure died in the House.

The House version of the more narrowly focused bill advanced all the way to the House Finance Budget Subcommittee, where it was placed among about 170 bills to be evaluated after the Legislature works out its regular budget.
