Gators spotted in Mississippi backwaters at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Alligators in Memphis?

Wildlife agents are looking into recent reports of gator sightings near the Bluff City.

They say it's possible that gators have moved northward due to the mild winters in the past ten years.

Authorities have gotten reports of alligator sightings on Mc-Kellar Lake, a backwater of the Mississippi just south of Memphis, and at T.O. Fuller State Park, north of the city.

Up to five alligators may have been seen, including one said to be close to seven feet long that was reportedly spotted on a bank beside Mc-Kellar Lake.

Alligators inhabit the river and its backwaters in Louisiana and Mississippi, but their natural range is believed to end south of Tennessee.
