Afternoon fire hospitalizes woman

A house fire late this afternoon sent a woman to the hospital in critical condition.

Flames broke out at a home on Chippewa near Getweell just before 2-o'clock.

Crews say the house was "fully involved" when they arrived.

The woman was trapped in a back bedroom. Firefighters rescued her and she was rushed to the hospital. Other family members made it out of the house okay.

"It's real sad any time your house catches on fire, but any time your mother has to be transported you're always worried till you find out how she's doing," said Memphis Fire Department Division Chief Skeeter Rutledge.

Firefighters also pulled two dogs from the home. One survived, but the other did not despite firefighters' efforts to resuscitate it.

There's no word on how the fire started. It's still under investigation.
