It's shaping up to be a great weekend at the FedEx St.Jude Classic. The course is playing more difficult this year. The cut is +4, with plenty of golfers within striking distance of the lead. The day started with a bang, when big John Daly had to withdraw with a bad back after a 77 yesterday. Memphian Shaun Micheel hasn't had much luck playing in his home town. The PGA Champion makes the put here but finishes with a 75 and misses the cut by 4 strokes. Casey Wittenberg does his hometown proud, playing the course he grew up on, the 21 year old fires the 2nd lowest round of the day with a 5 under 65, to move to minus-1 overall.
"You have to perform and you have to play well at given times and this is my first real big opportunity to play in a tour event."
But the spector of David Toms is looming. Toms has dominated this tournament over the last 5 years, winning twice. He cards a 67 to get to minus 4, 3 strokes off the lead.
"It's a tough golf course...the fairways are drying up and you really gotta pick and choose where you attack the greens. "
Toms is tied with rookie sensation Camillo Villegas who is also at minus 4, both guys chasing Darron Stiles who cards a 6 under 64 to catapult into the lead at 7 under.
So, Darron Stiles has a two stroke lead over Tom Pernice, Chris Smith and Tim Herron. David Toms and Camilo Villegas are 3 strokes back.
