Memphis Police Department Appling Farms Station personnel and Traffic Units are handling a traffic crash on westbound Interstate-40 at Appling Road.
Today at approximately 10:15 AM, a tractor trailer loaded with a backhoe was westbound in the center lane of I-40 approaching the Appling Road overpass. As the tractor trailer went underneath the overpass, the back it was hauling struck the east side of the overpass. The back hoe fell from the trailer onto westbound I-40. The Appling Road overpass sustained structural damage and a water main was ruptured.
Presently, three westbound lanes of I-40 are closed due to the wreckage, and northbound lanes of Appling are down to one lane open. Eastbound I-40 is presently unaffected, and the westbound ramp from Appling remains open at this time. Tennessee Department of Transportation, Fire Department and Memphis Light Gas and Water personnel are on scene to contain water and fuel spills. The Appling overpass will be inspected to determine if the structural damage warrants any further closure.
TRAFFIC IN THIS AREA WILL REMAIN AFFECTED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. MOTORISTS WILL INCUR SUBSTANTIAL DELAYS ON WEST BOUND I-40 EAST OF THE APPLING ROAD EXIT.
M.P.D. urges motorists to use Whitten or Germantown road for north and southbound travel from I-40.
