Mississippi man charged in West Memphis woman's death

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) - Crittenden County authorities have charged a Mississippi man with first-degree murder in the April death of a West Memphis woman.

40-year-old Tommy Wayne Powers of Senatobia, Mississippi, was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder for the death of 44-year-old Pamela Sue McWhirter. McWhirter's body was found April 9 in a pond near Interstate 55.

Three fishermen discovered the body near what is known as the Rock Island-Engineers overpass. The overpass is just outside the West Memphis city limits.

An autopsy shows that she died from blunt force trauma. Investigators say Powers met McWhirter in a bar the night of her death.

Powers was arrested by the Tate County Sheriff's Office in Mississippi, and officials expect he will be extradited to Arkansas to face charges.
