Grand jury to weigh murder charges against preacher's wife

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A grand jury is expected to decide today whether to indict a minister's wife charged with shooting her husband to death in the church parsonage.

Mary Winkler is accused of shooting Matthew Winkler, a minister of Fourth Street Church of Christ in Selmer, a small town 80 miles east of Memphis.

Authorities say Winkler confessed to shooting her husband on March 22nd although they have refused to discuss any reason she gave for the slaying.

The minister's body was found in the parsonage when he didn't show up for an evening church service.

The next day, Mary Winkler was found in Orange Beach, Alabama, with the couple's three daughters, who are now in the custody of their paternal grandparents.

After returning to Tennessee, Mary Winkler opted not to have a preliminary hearing and waived her case to the McNairy County Grand Jury. She is being held in the county jail.
