Residents at the Cedar Wood apartment complex in Memphis sifted through the ashes Thursday, after flames ripped through their homes.
Fire equipment and firefighters spent most of the day making sure there were no flare ups from smoldering rubble, after a huge wall of flames engulfed one section of the apartment building, sending the entire structure up in flames.
The fire spread so quickly that some residents were forced to jump from their balconies to safety. Witnesses said it was a very chaotic situation.
"We woke up to people knocking on the door telling us to clear the building," said resident Cassandra Smith. "Fire and blazes were just going everywhere, so we just grabbed kids and everybody just got together."
Seven people were taken to local hospitals and four firefighters were also treated, three for smoke inhalation, and one when he fell through a ceiling.
