Police chase ends in fatal crash

A dark-colored Honda led police on a nearly 30 minute chase that ended in a fatal collision Thursday morning.  The suspect, driving into oncoming traffic, slammed into a blue Lincoln at the intersection of Winchester and Air Park.

The suspect was driving a Honda that was car-jacked on June 5th near a gas station on Millbranch.  Police spotted the stolen car around 10:30am Thursday morning at Lamar and Pearson.  A pursuit began, eventually lasting almost 30 minutes, with a route that went as far as northern DeSoto County.

For a brief time when the Honda entered Mississippi, police called off the pursuit, but when the car traveled north on Airways back into Memphis, MPD officers once again picked up the chase.

Dozens of motorists were put in jeopardy as the fleeing car drove erratically, sometimes in oncoming traffic, in an attempt to escape police.  The pursuit ended at Winchester and Air Park, when a blue Lincoln collided with the fleeing Honda as it tried to avoid the oncoming car.

Emergency crews tended to the wounded and pronounced one person dead on the scene.  That person was a passenger in the suspect's car.

Witnesses in the area of the crash said it was something they would not soon forget.

“We heard the helicopter,” said witness Allen Quenichet, “and then a lot of sirens going off.”

"My heart was just going nuts,” said witness Greg Johnson. “I just went and grabbed the fire extinguisher, and ran out here and put it out fast as I could.”

A female passenger in the Honda was killed in the crash.  Four other people were taken to the Med.  Their names and conditions have not been released, but police said none of their injuries were life threatening.
