Child wounded in shooting dies at Memphis hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A 13-year-old girl died at a hospital Tuesday a day after she was shot in the head while playing in a Memphis park.

Police say Melissa Robertson was a bystander shot during an argument between two groups of young people.

"One group got into a vehicle and shots were fired from the car," said police Lt. Toney Armstrong. "The 13-year-old girl was hit in the head by shots fired."

Another child, a 5-year-old girl, was wounded in an unrelated shooting Monday while riding in a van with her family in another of town.

The youngster was shot in a leg and was not critically hurt, police said. The shootings came less than a week after Martez Henderson, 11, was shot and killed in a playground at a Memphis apartment complex.

Police say Henderson, too, was hit by a bullet fired at someone else.

Monday, police charged Montrel Javon Gilliam, 18, with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder in that shooting.

Police said Gilliam was shooting at a vehicle when three of bullets struck Henderson in the torso and another hit his 5-year-old cousin in an arm.

The younger boy was not critically hurt. So far this year, six Memphis children have been hurt or killed by stray gunfire.

Jakira Lewis, 2, died April 20 after being shot in her mother's arms during a drive-by shooting outside a public housing complex near downtown Memphis.

Last month, 12-year-old Dewawn Matthews was hit in the chest with a .22-caliber bullet fired near his residence.
