Police shut down nuisance homes

The District Attorney's office shut down an entire block of homes and a business Tuesday as part of the war on crime.

Memphis Police boarded up six homes and a convenience store in the 3200 block of Given Avenue, between Holmes and National.  Police evicted drug dealers living in the homes, and then boarded up their doors and windows.

Officials said despite police patrols, drug dealers and gang members ran the neighborhood.

"You couldn't even drive down the street," said Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin.  "How could they live, the citizens, when the drug dealers had taken over?"

Police said the convenience store on the block was at the center of the drug deals.  The store will stay closed until an August 10th hearing.
