Mother charged for leaving children in vehicle

The mother who left her young infant children in a hot car while she visited the Department of Human Services on Summer Avenue was charged late Tuesday.

Carlesia Johnson, 25, was charged with reckless endangerment, a Class A misdemeanor.  Officials said an investigation revealed that Johnson signed in to the DHS office at 10:14am Tuesday morning.  While she was inside, a passerby walked by her car and noticed her two 5-month old children crying inside.  One window of the car was rolled down nearly 2 inches.

Police Department officials estimate the children had been in the car for approximately 45 minutes when they were pulled out.  The children were suffering from extreme dehydration, and were transported to LeBonheur Children's Hospital for treatment.

Officials said the infants, who have not been identified by name, have been released from the hospital, and the Department of Children's Services will handle the case as it applies to their custody.

An August court date is pending for Johnson.
