Wharton re-elected as Shelby County mayor

A C Wharton, incumbent candidate in the race for Shelby County Mayor, was re-elected in Thursday's election.

Wharton, 61, was elected as Shelby County's first African-American mayor in 2002.

His opponent, John Willingham, a member of the Shelby County Commission, credited Wharton's victory to a higher fundraising budget and his connections within the county.

In a victory speech, surrounded by his campaign supporters and family, Wharton said he would continue the "hard work" that lead to a "successful" first term.
