Defense trying to get defendant's statements suppressed

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) - A hearing is being conducted this morning in Selmer for Mary Winkler, accused of killing her minister husband.

The defense this morning asked the court to suppress statements Winkler made to police as she was arrested in the shotgun slaying of Matthew Winkler in March.

The attorney says his client was under duress when she talked to police. Matthew Winkler's body was found by members of his Fourth Street Church of Christ congregation in Selmer when he failed to come to a Wednesday night church service on March 22nd.

Mary Winkler and the couple's three young daughters were found the next day in Orange Beach, Alabama, on the Gulf Coast.

Winkler told police she shot her husband in the back with a shotgun as he lay in bed following an evening of arguments over finances and other family matters.
